I couldn't help but laugh at how absurd some of these excerpts are. To play the devil's advocate, I would say that in some cases, context matters. For example, in Perfume I'm almost sure that the father is supposed to be someone the reader finds disgusting. In the case of Killing Commendatore, there is no amount of context that could save that line, that's just messed up.
